DOG SEES GOD
By: Bert V Royal
While reading the play, I decided that focusing on the most important connections between the play itself and the Peanuts comic strip would make the set a fun element for not only the characters to interact with but for the audience to engage with as well. The juxtaposition between the different mediums was held together by important iconic elements that were a vital part of the scenery (the doghouse, the piano, etc).
Overall, my approach to the design was simple: I wanted to take the Peanuts comic strip itself and twist and warp it in such a way that made the scenery a reflection of the characters in the play.
To help me arrive at my end product I focused on two types of research: the original cartoon/comic strip setting versus a relatable, realistic setting. By honoring both of these elements I was able to create a world that perfectly combined what the characters used to live in with today’s reality. This made it not only interesting, but relevant as well.
